FreshWater Cleveland

Every month, FreshWater Cleveland features a historic landmark around Cleveland. Blossom Music Center is celebrating its 50th season this year, so I wrote an article about its history.

The article linked to the left is about a new entertainment company called the Common Room Theatre and their original comedic trivia game, Pop-Cleveland! The Common Room Theatre launched in June 2018.

Heights Observer

During my internship with the Heights Observer, a volunteer community newspaper in Cleveland Heights, I have covered various municipal and arts events. This article expands on the Heights Music Hop, an annual weekend of live music that serves as a fundraiser for Future Heights.

In late July, Cleveland Heights passed legislation to create a Community Reinvestment Area. A CRA would offer property owners a tax incentive to do renovations and/or construction on their buildings.

The city of Cleveland Heights announced that they were beginning a branding study to redefine the image of their city. I reported on this branding study for the Heights Observer.

Cleveland Heights City Council is considering  development legislation for the Meadowbrook and Lee site at their July 16 meeting.

Shaker Life

In the summer of 2017, I wrote an article for Shaker Life Magazine about resident Aaron Goldhammer, co-host of The Really Big Show on WKNR 850. He talked about his job as a radio host and his excitement for the upcoming Van Aken District.

John Carroll Magazine

For one semester during college, I had an internship with the John Carroll Magazine. I had the chance to interview Paul Guglielmo, an alumnus who works as a radio host in Rochester, New York and owns his own pasta sauce company.

Another article that I wrote for the John Carroll Magazine featured alumnus Jake Oresick, who published his first book about the history of his alma mater, Schenley High School, in Pittsburgh.

The Carroll News

One of the final articles that I wrote for The Carroll News discusses plans that the new president, Dr. Michael Johnson, has in mind for John Carroll University.

When Mark Krieger, the director of WJCU and a communication profession, retired in 2017, I wrote a profile about him for The Carroll News. The article I wrote was later engraved on a plaque and given to Krieger as a retirement gift.

WJCU

This is one of the weekly local news podcasts that I made for WJCU. The podcast discusses the recent decision by the Cleveland Heights University Heights School District to close its school on Coventry Rd.

I made a special edition of Heights Now! to look into recent incidents of discrimination and racial profiling toward John Carroll's Latin American Student Association.

During the summer of 2017, I made the daily weather tracks for WJCU. Here is a sample of my work.

Academics

Three other classmates and I made an audio documentary about the Carroll Ballers, a group of John Carroll students who mentors kids at the Cleveland Juvenile Detention Center by playing basketball with them.

I wanted to hear more about my diverse family and their life stories, so I conducted a familial oral history about race. I talked to my parents and grandparents to learn about their different races, backgrounds, and socioeconomic statuses, and how they came together to make me who I am.

For my senior capstone project, I studied how black Americans are represented in television, especially the sitcoms The Cosby Show and Blackish. I have attached the final essay for my project, which discusses the literature, my research questions, methods, results, limitations, and conclusions.
